Losing the Elections
By Anonymous
My experience with sports club elections taught me a lot about resilience. In the end of my third year, I was very keen to join any sports club committee and ran for the same position in a few clubs. I felt very confident about my suitability and didn’t pay much attention to preparing the speech, which, as I discovered later, was pretty crucial. I am not a very good public speaker, and I struggled to get across why I was good for the position at the first elections. No wonder I didn’t get the position, which I blame on the lack of preparation.
I felt like a failure because I had been trying very hard at other elections later, but couldn’t win nonetheless. However, by running for the same position at different sports club and not dwelling on my failures, I had a chance to practise a lot before the last elections for the committee I wanted to join the most. After putting a lot more effort into my speech than at previous elections, I got the position. I am actually very grateful for the harsh start, which benefited me in the future. When I was applying for jobs in the spring, I made sure to put enough effort into preparation and didn’t let myself be discouraged by the rejections, which did pay off when I got a job offer after the graduation.
